Originally developed by George Greenough in the late '60s, the Stage III ushered in a new era of longboard surfing.
It blends hold and release for genuine rail-to-rail turns, and it suits the longboarder who wants the board to feel lively rather than parked — the base and rake give drive and hold, while the upright shape and tip keep it loose and responsive.
Put it on a classic or performance log when you want to surf rail to rail and turn off the tail, not just noseride — it still finds clean trim and nose time, which is exactly its reason for existing. If locked-in nose time on a heavy log is the priority, the Heritage is steadier, and note this fin fills the whole box, so no leash knot and no position adjustment.
The Stage III is a large, upright longboard single fin built by True Ames from one of George Greenough's original late-1960s Wave Set templates, modified to fit a standard fin box. The outline is tall and upright with a wide base and moderate rake, and it comes in two sizes, 9.75" and 10.5". The fin runs the full length of the box, leaving no room for a leash knot or fore-aft position adjustment. It is intended for classic and performance longboards.
Mentioned in the review — Heritage · Greenough 4A — not something we carry.
Volan is a woven fiberglass cloth laid by hand and finished with a resin that cures to a warm amber tint. It flexes differently than solid fiberglass — more spring, more life, more feel through turns. Where solid glass is stiff and direct, volan breathes with the wave.
The hand-laid process means each fin has subtle texture and character. It's heavier, which adds momentum through flat sections. Surfers who ride volan describe it as "warmer" — the fin does more of the work, trimming and holding without demanding constant input.
