La Greenough High Speed dà il meglio proprio dove dice il nome: alle alte velocità . È forse uno degli esempi più autentici dei rivoluzionari design di pinne ad alto allungamento di George Greenough: come le ali di un aereo, il suo profilo slanciato raccoglie una gran quantità di potenza e genera portanza mantenendo una resistenza molto bassa. Le onde lunghe, di tipo point break, sono il terreno ideale per tirare fuori tutto il potenziale di questa pinna.
Greenough è l'uomo dietro a un'evoluzione continua di innovazioni nel cavalcare l'onda, a cui in molti attribuiscono il merito di aver aperto la strada dal longboard tradizionale al surf ad alte prestazioni in pocket. In origine ha disegnato la High Speed per accompagnare le sue tavole “Edge”, che il celebre shaper Marc Andreini ha descritto come “ due tavole in una: una tow board stretta e concava con bordi netti, dal nose al tail, shapata sotto uno scafo a dislocamento con rail pieni e sollevati.” Come le sue tavole Edge, anche la pinna High Speed di Greenough funziona in tutte le condizioni e si difende bene nelle onde potenti. Quali che fossero le intenzioni iniziali di Greenough per questa pinna, si è evoluta e in tanti hanno dimostrato che rende benissimo su una gran varietà di tipi di tavola, dalle mid-length ai glider e su tutto quello che sta in mezzo.
True Ames realizza questa pinna solo in Volan, perché il suo design ad alto allungamento richiede la trama più forte e più spessa possibile. Non fraintendere: con una superficie relativamente ridotta, la pinna flette. Ma l'integrità strutturale del Volan genera potenza e drive, e alla fine permette di ottenere il rendimento migliore.
True Ames costruisce le sue pinne in Volan pensando al flex tanto quanto all'outline. Prodotta da True Ames a Santa Barbara, CA. I pannelli Volan sono laminati e sagomati in modo che la trama corra nel verso giusto, e il flex nasce dal corpo della pinna più che dalla sola punta. Questo dà velocità e proiezione in uscita dal bottom e nelle curve.

The panels are laid so the flex comes from the body and trunk rather than only the tip, which enhances speed and projection off the bottom and through turns. It springs and accelerates rather than plants and holds.
Our take
A specialist, not an all-rounder: put it on a speed-oriented single fin board or glider for long, clean point waves, where the lift and low drag pay off. If you want one fin that behaves on any board you own, the Greenough 4A is the safer pick.

A slender, high-aspect single fin from the George Greenough line, made by True Ames exclusively in Volan glass because the thin profile requires the strongest, thickest weave; the panels are laid so flex comes from the body and trunk rather than only the tip. Perché il Volan?
Volan is a woven fiberglass cloth laid by hand and finished with a resin that cures to a warm amber tint. It flexes differently than solid fiberglass — more spring, more life, more feel through turns. Where solid glass is stiff and direct, volan breathes with the wave.
The hand-laid process means each fin has subtle texture and character. It's heavier, which adds momentum through flat sections. Surfers who ride volan describe it as "warmer" — the fin does more of the work, trimming and holding without demanding constant input.
