Preface
Robin Kegel’s overall fin and surfing philosophy is rooted in the conviction that surfboards and their fins must operate as a seamlessly integrated system, not as separate components. Deeply influenced by innovators like George Greenough, Robin values the interplay of board outline, rail shape, and fin flex, believing that true surf performance is achieved when all these elements harmonize to enhance speed, flow, and a dynamic connection to the wave. He deliberately moves away from fins as nostalgic accessories or mere pivots, instead seeking to maximize the board’s potential for fluid rail engagement, lively feedback underfoot, and expressive, modern surfing that still respects traditional roots.
In his fin design, Robin applies this philosophy by engineering each Gato Heroi fin with precise flex characteristics, foil profiles, and shape, specifically tailored to unlock the intended performance of its matching board model. Rather than defaulting to stiff or purely retro templates, he experiments with variable flex zones and progressive foiling, so fins can store and release energy through turns, making boards feel quicker, more responsive, and suited to both classic noseriding and new-school maneuvers. This approach means Gato Heroi boards, when matched to Robin’s carefully designed fins, offer a uniquely lively, rail driven ride that rewards committed surfers with both traditional glide and modern maneuverability.
Gato Heroi Fins: Buyer’s Guide, Board Pairings & Technical Details
C Fin
High-aspect flex fin for performance longboards and midlengths
More area carried through the tip for the best of both worlds — stable noseriding and drive through turns. Generous rake draws wide, arcing driving turns; minimal drag, fast and manoeuvrable.
T Fin
High-speed flex fin for mid-lengths and foiled-out longboards
Wide base for drive, narrow tip for flex — the base drives while the loaded tip springs you out of bottom turns and cutbacks. Best on vee-bottom models (Playboy, Space Pig PG). Refined from the classic CHIZ template.
B Fin
Upright pivot fin for classic logs and noseriders
Large upright base and slightly tapered tip — a traditional pivot fin: controlled drag for noseride stability and snapping pivot turns.
D Fin
Driving, arcing log fin with more area than the C
The same rake as the C but more surface area — adds stability, especially on the nose, while keeping smooth arcing turns with drive. A great option to transform your board on smaller days.
OP Fin
Low-aspect “skeg” for pigs and rolled-bottom logs
An oldschool, low-aspect drag fin — a refinement for pigs and rolled-bottom shapes. Distinct from the Killer fin (which is the upright drop-knee squaretail template).
F Fin
Deep-raked hold-and-drive fin
A deep raked planshape for maximum hold and lateral flex — arcing, drawn-out turns for midlengths and longboards, plus superior hold for single-fin shortboards.
L Fin
Stiff, low-aspect raked log and noseride hold fin
A stiff, low-aspect log template that holds through the base with rake and drag — built for noseride hold and classic trim rather than lively flex.
Killer Fin
Upright squaretail fin for drop-knee tail release
Extremely upright and knifed for crisp tail release and powerful drop-knee pivots on squaretail shapes. Distinct from the OP (the low-aspect drag skeg).
RK Fin
Robin Kegel's versatile all-around log fin
Balanced versatility and proportions, with a fuller tip than the T and C — works in any longboard and adds stability for drop-knees and noseriding.
P Fin
“P is for pivot” — upright pivot and noserider fin
An upright pivot with a full outline, wide base and medium flex — holds the tail in for noseriding, with short-radius pivot turns and small directional adjustments for stable trips to the nose.
H Fin
Skinny pivot for light logs
Narrow pivot template — loose turns with nose hold. Designed for 1960s-style lightweight boards where you want to lock the tail for noseriding but still redirect quickly in the pocket.
A Fin
Full, raked, stiff low-aspect classic pivot and noserider fin
A full, stiff, low-aspect template in the classic-noserider family — riders liken it to a Velzy Classic, but bigger and fuller with a touch more rake. Built for noseride hold and classic trim, not high-aspect performance.
