Preface

Robin Kegel’s overall fin and surfing philosophy is rooted in the conviction that surfboards and their fins must operate as a seamlessly integrated system, not as separate components. Deeply influenced by innovators like George Greenough, Robin values the interplay of board outline, rail shape, and fin flex, believing that true surf performance is achieved when all these elements harmonize to enhance speed, flow, and a dynamic connection to the wave. He deliberately moves away from fins as nostalgic accessories or mere pivots, instead seeking to maximize the board’s potential for fluid rail engagement, lively feedback underfoot, and expressive, modern surfing that still respects traditional roots.

In his fin design, Robin applies this philosophy by engineering each Gato Heroi fin with precise flex characteristics, foil profiles, and shape, specifically tailored to unlock the intended performance of its matching board model. Rather than defaulting to stiff or purely retro templates, he experiments with variable flex zones and progressive foiling, so fins can store and release energy through turns, making boards feel quicker, more responsive, and suited to both classic noseriding and new-school maneuvers. This approach means Gato Heroi boards, when matched to Robin’s carefully designed fins, offer a uniquely lively, rail driven ride that rewards committed surfers with both traditional glide and modern maneuverability.

C Fin

High-aspect flex fin for performance longboards and midlengths

More area carried through the tip for the best of both worlds — stable noseriding and drive through turns. Generous rake draws wide, arcing driving turns; minimal drag, fast and manoeuvrable.

Flex
Progressive, tip loads and releases through turns
Rake
Generous (tip well behind base for wide arcing turns)
Specs
Height 9.5–10 in, base 5.9–6.1 in, 10–11 mm thick at base tapering to 4–6 mm at tip
Boards
Smooth Operator, Chop Op, Acid, Fat Cat, select high-performance midlengths

T Fin

High-speed flex fin for mid-lengths and foiled-out longboards

Wide base for drive, narrow tip for flex — the base drives while the loaded tip springs you out of bottom turns and cutbacks. Best on vee-bottom models (Playboy, Space Pig PG). Refined from the classic CHIZ template.

Flex
Medium — drive from the base, flex through the tip
Rake
Upright, near-vertical trailing edge
Specs
Height 9.5–9.75 in, wide base 6.2–6.5 in, narrow tip, 13 mm at base down to 5 mm tip
Boards
Playboy, Space Pig, Space Pig PG, Acid, Roach, Playdate, Operator, Killer — mid-lengths and foiled longboards

B Fin

Upright pivot fin for classic logs and noseriders

Large upright base and slightly tapered tip — a traditional pivot fin: controlled drag for noseride stability and snapping pivot turns.

Flex
Low, stiff for control and stability
Rake
Low (tip set about 3 in behind base)
Specs
Height 9.5–10 in, base 6.6–6.8 in, 14 mm base to 7 mm tip
Boards
Californian, Playdate, Fat Cat, Creme logs, boards with wider tails or added tail rocker

D Fin

Driving, arcing log fin with more area than the C

The same rake as the C but more surface area — adds stability, especially on the nose, while keeping smooth arcing turns with drive. A great option to transform your board on smaller days.

Flex
Stiff base with drive
Rake
Generous — same as the C fin, with more area
Specs
Height 9.5–10.25 in, base 7.2–7.5 in, 15 mm base to 8 mm tip
Boards
Smooth Operator, Chop Op, Playboy, Fat Cat, Playdate

OP Fin

Low-aspect “skeg” for pigs and rolled-bottom logs

An oldschool, low-aspect drag fin — a refinement for pigs and rolled-bottom shapes. Distinct from the Killer fin (which is the upright drop-knee squaretail template).

Flex
Moderate
Rake
Low aspect, raked
Specs
Height 9.5–10 in, base 6.3 in, 12–13 mm base, 6 mm tip
Boards
Smooth Operator, Chop Op, pigs and rolled-bottom boards

F Fin

Deep-raked hold-and-drive fin

A deep raked planshape for maximum hold and lateral flex — arcing, drawn-out turns for midlengths and longboards, plus superior hold for single-fin shortboards.

Flex
Lateral flex through a deep-raked template
Rake
Deep rake
Specs
Height 9.5–10 in, base 6.5 in, 12 mm base, 6 mm tip
Boards
Midlengths, longboards, and single-fin shortboards

L Fin

Stiff, low-aspect raked log and noseride hold fin

A stiff, low-aspect log template that holds through the base with rake and drag — built for noseride hold and classic trim rather than lively flex.

Flex
Stiff
Rake
Raked, low aspect
Specs
Height 9.5–10 in, base 6.5–6.8 in, 12–13 mm thick at base tapering to 6 mm at tip
Boards
Classic Gato Heroi logs and noseriders

Killer Fin

Upright squaretail fin for drop-knee tail release

Extremely upright and knifed for crisp tail release and powerful drop-knee pivots on squaretail shapes. Distinct from the OP (the low-aspect drag skeg).

Flex
Moderate, controlled yet lively
Rake
Extremely upright, low rake
Specs
Height 9.5–10 in, base 6.3 in, 12–13 mm base, 6 mm tip
Boards
Killer, Chop Op, squaretail Operator

RK Fin

Robin Kegel's versatile all-around log fin

Balanced versatility and proportions, with a fuller tip than the T and C — works in any longboard and adds stability for drop-knees and noseriding.

Flex
Moderate, fuller tip than the T and C
Rake
Moderate (tip just behind base)
Specs
Height 9.75–10 in, base 6.0–6.25 in, 12 mm base to 5 mm tip
Boards
Playboy, Killer, Surfar, Smooth Operator, Playdate, Dagger, Californian — modern standard logs and all-around boards

P Fin

“P is for pivot” — upright pivot and noserider fin

An upright pivot with a full outline, wide base and medium flex — holds the tail in for noseriding, with short-radius pivot turns and small directional adjustments for stable trips to the nose.

Flex
Medium
Rake
Upright pivot
Specs
Height 10.25 in, wide base 7 in, 14 mm at base, 7 mm tip
Boards
Creme-series logs — especially the Playdate

H Fin

Skinny pivot for light logs

Narrow pivot template — loose turns with nose hold. Designed for 1960s-style lightweight boards where you want to lock the tail for noseriding but still redirect quickly in the pocket.

Flex
Moderate, responsive
Rake
Low, upright
Specs
Height 10 in, skinny pivot template, volan construction
Boards
Playdate, Smooth Operator, Fleur, and other lightweight 60s-style logs

A Fin

Full, raked, stiff low-aspect classic pivot and noserider fin

A full, stiff, low-aspect template in the classic-noserider family — riders liken it to a Velzy Classic, but bigger and fuller with a touch more rake. Built for noseride hold and classic trim, not high-aspect performance.

Flex
Stiff
Rake
Generous, low aspect
Specs
Low-aspect full raked template, height 9–9.5 in
Boards
Classic Gato Heroi logs and noseriders
