Greenough High Speed (Volan)

From $104.00 USD

The Greenough High Speed excels as its name implies–at high speeds. It is perhaps one of the truest examples of George Greenough’s revolutionary high-aspect ratio fin designs; similar to the wings of an airplane, its slender design will harness heaps of power and produce lift while maintaining very low drag. Longer, point break style waves make a prime venue to realize this fin’s full potential. Greenough is the man behind a continual evolution of wave-riding innovations that are widely attributed for paving the way from traditional longboarding to high-performance surfing in the pocket. He originally designed the High Speed to accompany his “Edge” boards, which have been described by renowned shaper Marc Andreini as “two surfboards in one: a narrow concave tow board with hard edges, nose to tail, is shaped underneath a displacement hull with full lifted rails.” Like Greenough’s Edge boards, his High Speed fin works in all conditions, and prevails well in powerful surf. No matter Greenough’s original intentions for this fin, it has evolved and been proven by many to work wonderfully in a wide variety of board types–from mid-lengths to gliders, and everything in between. True Ames make this fin in Volan only because its high-aspect ratio design requires it to be made with the strongest and thickest weave possible. Don’t get wrong–with relatively little surface area, the fin is going to flex. But the structural integrity of the Volan will generate power and drive, and ultimately allow for optimal performance. The Volan fins are fine-tuned with precision foils as well as proper flex. Crafted with a labor of love at the factory in Santa Barbara, CA, these fins undergo the strictest quality control. The Volan panels are meticulously hand-laid and templated ensuring optimal weave orientation and superior strength, with flex coming more from the body rather than just the tip. This enhances speed and projection off the bottom and through turns, making the Volan fins a pinnacle of the highest performance flex characteristics. High-aspect ratio, slender design will produce power and lift with minimal drag Pairs well with many types of boards, from mid-lengths to gliders and everything in between Volan fiberglass construction generates high-performance flex

Fin Construction: Volan
Designer Name: George Hamilton Perkins Greenough
Designer Origin: Santa Barbara, California
Designer Bio: Greenough treated the fin as a true hydrodynamic foil—pursuing high-aspect, lower-drag outlines and intentional flex to reduce drag and increase control through powerful arcs. His "high aspect ratio" and signature flex-fin concepts helped unlock faster, more radical surfing lines and were central influences on the 1960s–70s performance/shortboard progression.
