You have seen two products with the same name and different last words β Regular and Goofy β and assumed one of them is a typo.
It isn't. They are different fins, and the wrong one puts the big drive fin on the rail that wanted the pair, which makes both sides of your board worse than the symmetric set you took off.
Your two rails are not doing the same job
Your weight has never been distributed evenly across the board's width. One foot is forward near the middle, the other back near the tail. Turning toward your toes and turning toward your heels are two different physical acts β different leverage, different ankle range, different amount of the wave you can see while you do it.
Carl Ekstrom patented the idea in 1967, and the stated purpose is worth reading in the original. The asymmetric tail exists to "compensate for the offset weight distribution of a rider in normal stance and gives the board substantially equal turning ability in either direction."
Note what that is about. Not waves. Not speed. Stance. The asymmetry exists because your feet are where they are β which is exactly why these ship in a Regular version and a Goofy one.
What the set does about it
Every asym set we carry is three fins: one large fin on the toe side, two smaller fins on the heel side. That is not a compromise between a twin and a thruster. It is a twin on one rail and half a quad on the other.
The toe side gets one big fin because that is where you have the most leverage, and leverage is what a big fin rewards.
Why the heel side gets two instead of one larger one is the whole design. Split a given area in two and each fin carries half the load, so they reach the angle where they stall at different moments. One big fin holds, holds, then lets go all at once. A leading fin with a smaller one behind it lets go in sequence β the rear sits partly in the front's wake, engages later, gives up earlier.
Staged release is what a backside turn needs, because you are committing to an arc you can see less of and cannot lean as hard into.
And the heel side carries more area than the toe side in all three sets, by between 11% and 25%. That surprises people who expect the weaker side to get less fin. It is the right way round: the heel side needs enough area to hold through a turn you cannot lean into, split in two so it does not lock up.
You may already know how two of these feel
This is the most useful thing here, and nobody says it. The heel side of two of these sets is a quad you can already look up.
The two heel-side fins of the Lovelace asym are the Lovelace Piggyback Quad front and rear β identical published dimensions to the hundredth of an inch. The two heel-side fins of the Album asym are the Album Quad front and rear, matching on every figure. True Ames is not hiding it: the Lovelace copy calls that side "the quad setup," and it says of the Burch outright, "The toe side fin is from the Burch Twin."
So if you have ridden the Piggyback or the Album Quad, you already know what that rail is going to do. For those two, an asym set is not a leap into the unknown β it is two familiar things, one per rail.
The Burch heel pair matches no quad True Ames sells. That one you read fresh.
What actually separates the three
How wide the heel-side split is. A wide gap between the two heel fins puts the work in the front one and lets the small rear break loose early. A narrow gap keeps both engaged deeper into the turn. Lovelace has the widest split and the loosest heel-side tail; Album has the narrowest and the most planted.
How much toe-side fin. More toe-side area is more hold and more projection through a frontside bottom turn, and less willingness to come around when you ask. The spread across the three is small in absolute terms and still the clearest single difference between them.
What is not a variable: price β all three are the same. Foil β we can state the Burch's outright and could not establish the other two, so any ranking that turns on it is guesswork. And cant, toe and distance from the rail belong to the boxes in your board, not to any fin you buy.
The limit worth saying out loud
Asymmetric fins in a symmetric board do less than asymmetric fins in a board built asymmetric. True Ames says so on the Lovelace pages β the set is "designed to pair with asymmetrical boards made for REGULAR foot surfers."
The fins can give your rails different area and a different number of fins. They cannot give them different length or different curve, and on an asym board the outline does most of the work.
Almost everybody reading this is on a symmetric board, so decide it here. Run them in one and you get a real but partial version of the effect: a rail that drives and a rail that pivots. That is still the effect, and it is the only way to find out whether the asym idea is yours before committing to a board built around it.
Which one is yours
Stance first, because it is not a preference. Stand up, look down, see which rail your toes point at. Left foot forward is Regular. Right foot forward is Goofy.
Then your boxes, because they delete two of the three designs. Two small plugs per fin is FCS; one long slot with a single screw is Futures. On FCS: Album or Lovelace. On Futures: Burch or Lovelace.
Your backhand is what you are trying to fix, and you're on Futures. Ryan Burch at $133.50 β the most heel-biased set made, and the closest of the three to Ekstrom's original argument. Burch met Ekstrom in San Diego and took the idea further in practice than anyone. Goofy version. The trade is real: it has the least toe-side fin on offer, so it gives up some drive down the line to make the backside turn easier.
Your frontside is where the good surfing happens and you want more of it. Lovelace, Futures at $133.50 or FCS β the most toe-biased set, with the largest toe-side base. True Ames calls it "the small keel on the toe-side," and a base that wide is keel thinking. Goofy in Futures or FCS. It is also the least corrective of the three β if the backhand is the complaint, the Burch does more.
Bigger, faster waves, or you're heavier, or the other two feel skittish. Album at $133.50, FCS only β the most fin overall and the most planted heel side. Matt Parker drew it with True Ames out of the same thinking as his DisAsym boards. Goofy version. In small surf it is more fin than the wave is asking for.
Curious rather than committed. Lovelace. It is the closest of the three to a conventional fin, the only design we list in both systems and both stances, and therefore the one answer here that cannot dead-end on your boxes.
The board that makes the experiment worth doing is one you already surf well frontside and badly backside. That is the complaint Ekstrom filed his patent to answer in 1965, and it is still the one these fins answer best.
