Pick any fin on our site and you get a dropdown labelled Color. Open it and you find smoke, clear, kelp, red. You also find Volan, and smoke hexcore.
Four of those are paint. Two are a different fin. They are in the same list.
That is why the material question never resolves β you are comparing a tint to a construction under one word that is accurate for half the menu. Then a forum tells you Volan is stiffer, or livelier, or just nostalgia, and there is no number anywhere to settle it.
There are numbers. They are not the ones you expect, and one of them runs the wrong way.
What a laminate can and cannot change
A fin is a cantilever: anchored at the base, loaded across its face by water, resisting that load by bending. Everything a material does, it does to the bending.
It does not do anything to the outline β the assumption most material arguments quietly smuggle in. Take any template True Ames builds in two constructions and read the dimensions off both pages: the TA Twin, the Hobie Fish, the TW Bar of Soap all match to the second decimal across fiberglass, Hexcore and plywood. The template is the template.
So if what you want is more area or more rake, material is not the lever. That decision belongs to the quad guide or the Greenough guide.
What is left for the material to change is where along the fin the bending happens, and how consistently it comes back. That is a narrower claim than the marketing makes, and the only one the evidence supports.
Volan is a big-fin technology
Volan is not a finish. True Ames describes it as "a heavier weight glass with a more coarse and dense weave" β a 44-layer panel, laid up by hand at "about 2 hours for a 30x30" panel."
The part that matters is the orientation. They template and align each panel for "optimal weave orientation (about 70* perpendicular to the base)" β their asterisk, their phrasing β and state the consequence plainly: it lets the fins "flex more through the body and 'trunk', as opposed to just in the thinner tip area."
That is a claim about where, not how much, and it is the most misread thing about Volan. A standard panel gives at the tip, the thinnest and least supported part of the blade. Rotate the fibres and the compliant region moves into the trunk, so more of the fin stores and returns load instead of the last inch whipping.
Here is the tell nobody mentions. True Ames' Volan collection is twenty-one products and every one of them is a single fin. No Volan thruster set. No Volan quad. No Volan side bite. The one Volan product outside that collection is the Ryan Burch Rakey Twin, a long raked template that behaves like a single fin cut in half.
That is not a gap in the range β it follows from the mechanism. Moving the flexing region into the body of the blade only means something if there is a body to flex. On a 4.5" thruster fin the whole blade is trunk, with no tip-versus-body distinction left to redistribute.
Believe the mechanism. Do not believe any number attached to it: True Ames publishes no stiffness figure, no panel thickness and no weight for Volan, on any of the twenty-one. A flex rating you have read for a Volan fin was invented somewhere downstream.
Hexcore is not a tier you graduate to
True Ames calls it "RTM Hexcore construction" and says it is "super light" with "excellent flex characteristics." What the core is made of, what it weighs and how much it flexes are all unpublished β three adjectives and a process name is the entire disclosure.
Hexcore sounds like the upgrade. Price it instead, holding template and system constant, and it is cheaper on eight of the nine pairs we can compare.
The ninth is the interesting one. On the KC Tri in FCS, Hexcore costs $18.00 more β and the Hexcore price never moved. All four tri sets are $123.50 in Hexcore, without exception. What moved is the fiberglass: every fiberglass tri set is $128.50 except the KC in FCS, which sits alone on a $105.50 line.
So the construction did not get more expensive. A different variant of the same fin got cheaper, and the dropdown reports that as though it were a material decision.
Which tells you what Hexcore is: not a tier, but a different process β resin transfer moulding against the hand layup they detail for Volan β yielding a light fin with a different flex response. Whether you want that response is a real question. Whether it is better is not one anybody has given you the means to answer.
The tint moves the price more than the construction does
Smoke, clear, kelp, seafoam grey β same layup, same template, same ride. Pigment does not change how a panel bends and True Ames does not claim it does.
It belongs in this post anyway, because it costs more than the construction does. On the L-Flex at 9.5", seafoam grey is $89.75 and clear is $103.50 β same page, same size, $13.75 apart. The Volan version of that fin is only $11.00 over the clear one.
Same on the Greenough 4-A: at 6.5", orange is $69.00, Rotten Avocado is $82.75, and the other seven tints are $84.00. Three price lines, one size, one fin β and the cheapest is the colour that did not sell.
If flex talk means nothing to you yet, that is the whole answer: buy the standard fin in the cheapest colour listed in your size, and spend the difference on getting the height right.
Two things you cannot buy here. Marine plywood is the one genuinely different substrate, and every plywood product True Ames makes is a glass-on β none of our 299 fins is glass-on, because we sell fins for boxes. That is a conversation with a shaper. And do not read Gato Heroi's "Marine" as marine plywood; it sits beside Dijon, Rust and Cobalt. It is a colour.
One figure you will not find anywhere: weight β not for any of these, including Hexcore, where lightness is the whole pitch. Treat it as unquantified, then ask whether you would act on it if you had it. Whatever the difference is at the tail of a 9'0" log, it is not what is limiting your surfing.
Which one is yours
A single fin 8" or over, and you want it alive through the trunk. Volan β the one case where the upgrade is real. On a log or a mid-length noserider, the Greenough 4-A Volan, $95.00 to $120.00. Pay the $10.00 to $14.50 over the standard 4-A and stop thinking about it. Want more give on a mid-length? Volan L-Flex. Pintail or a clean-lined log? Skip Frye Volan.
A twin. Volan is back on the table, for the same reason β a long raked twin has the span to flex through its body. The Ryan Burch Rakey Twin in Volan, $123.50, Futures: the one Volan set outside the single-fin collection, and exactly the fin this argument predicts should exist. On a keel, the Wild Things 4.8 Volan Keel Twin at $115.00, hand-foiled in Byron Bay.
A thruster or quad set. Volan is not an option β True Ames makes none β so it is Hexcore or fiberglass, and you should check the price rather than assume it. Usually Hexcore wins on both counts: the Timmy Patterson Quad in Hexcore at $138.50 is lighter and $10.00 under the same template in fiberglass. Not always. On the KC Tri in FCS the fiberglass set is $105.50 against $123.50 for Hexcore β and that fiberglass KC is the cheapest three-fin set we sell. If your board takes FCS and price is deciding, buy it.
You are chasing one specific feel on a shortboard-adjacent single fin. You want the blade to twist under load rather than bend, and you already know you want that β nobody buys their way into it by accident. The Power Blade or the Power Glide 45, both $197.50, both on a layup True Ames describes rather than itemises: "a blend of heat-treated and bonded high-strength materials." The fins with the highest material claim in the range are the ones with the least material information. Buy them for the twist, not the layup β the Power Blade vs 4-A post sorts out which suits you.
Still not sure. Standard fiberglass, in whatever colour is cheapest in your size. It is the baseline everything else is measured against, it is most of the range, and nothing here is a mistake you have to live with β a fin is the one part of your setup you can change in a car park, with the key already in your hand.
The menu reads like a quality ladder: standard glass at the bottom, something moulded and technical in the middle, hand-laid Volan at the top. It isn't one. The technical-sounding construction is usually the cheaper one, and the hand-laid one only makes sense on a big fin.
