Bonzer runners are normally glassed on at a steep angle, and this set reproduces that on a plug. True Ames cut the fins from the Campbell Bros B5 template and built 19° of cant into the tabs to match the angle of the glass-on version. Shallow depth, wide base, extreme cant: 2.37" deep, 4.75" of base, 7.60 sq in a side, in solid fiberglass.
Base is where drive comes from and depth is where drag comes from, so a fin this long and this shallow pushes the board forward rather than pinning it on rail. The cant is the other half of it — laid over that far, the runners do their work when the board is on its side and stay out of the way when it is flat. It is a distinctly different feel from an upright side bite, which is the reason to try it.
2+1 experimentation more than anything else: mid-lengths, stubbies and gliders where you want the water organised along the rail rather than a second pair of turning fins. True Ames offer the template this way as a means of getting Bonzer behaviour out of a board that is not a Bonzer.
Want more of the same? The Bonzer Side Bite 2.75" Fiberglass (FCS) is the larger version of this template. Running an actual Bonzer? The Bonzer Runners (4) - FCS Compatible (Solid Fiberglass) is the full four-fin set.
