The Fin

A 2.5" centre trailer β€” 4.88 square inches of fin β€” for the fifth box on a quad or the rear box of a thruster.

2.50" deep on a 2.62" base, in solid fiberglass. It is a centre fin small enough to change how a board feels without adding a fin's worth of drag: run it as the fifth fin behind a quad, or drop it into a thruster's rear box in place of the standard trailer. The foil section is ultra thin, which is where the low drag comes from.

How that reads

A trailer this small holds the back of the board together without steering it. In a five-fin box it settles a quad down and gives the tail a point to pivot on; in a thruster's rear box it takes area out of the back of the board, which loosens the tail and shortens the turn. Less area also means less resistance, so nothing is paid for in speed. It is also worth trying behind a twin, where a centre fin this small adds stability without turning the board into a thruster.

Who it suits

Quads with a fifth box, twins with a centre box, and thrusters you want freer off the tail. If what you want from a centre trailer is hold rather than release, the 3.3" is the bigger one.

If this is not the one

Want hold rather than release? The True Ames 3.3" Trailer - Futures Compatible (Solid Fiberglass). Want a trailer that flexes and springs back? The True Ames PT-1 (Greenough Power Trailer) (Futures).

What people say

A twin-plus-trailer feels much faster and looser than as a thruster, with the center fin held in reserve for waves over shoulder high and hollow.
Jamboards Β· Surfing a Twin+Trailer in a Thruster Setup - Jamboards
It is a mistake to think a thruster rail fin position makes a valid twinny, or a valid twin fin location translates to a thruster feel.

Build a twin or build a thruster. I think you compromise too much otherwise.

Our take

Get this if you surf a Futures twin and want a quick swap for tail hold on bigger, faster days, or if you want to nudge a 2+1 toward thruster feel. Run it as a true twin you stiffen on demand, not a pretend thruster β€” and if you would rather add grip to a single fin, side bites are the better tool.

More About This Fin

The True Ames 2.5" Trailer is a solid fiberglass center fin with a Futures base, sized at 2.5" to ride behind a twin or thruster cluster as the third or fifth fin. The template uses a low height, narrow base, and thin foil section, and sits below the height of standard 4.5"-class twin fins. It pairs with Futures twin setups such as the Beamish Twin or Alex Lopez Terrapin Twin, and the same template is also offered with an FCS base.
