The Details
Akira opens with Tokyo exploding in 1988 — the year the film came out — then rebuilds it as Neo-Tokyo, host of the 2020 Olympics, a detail that came true. When Katsuhiro Otomo's film reached American midnight screenings it more or less seeded US anime fandom, and the licensed 1988 Fashion Victim shirts are now the benchmark grail of the entire vintage-anime category. This shirt is the other lineage: the bootleg. Big logo over katakana, the character art red-washed into a collage — Kaneda in his capsule-logo jacket, Tetsuo slumped on his junk throne — it borrows the grammar of the 90s bootleg rap tee and applies it to a cartoon, which is exactly how anime got cool in the West: unofficially. The back is the design everyone knows — the red-and-blue capsule ringed with GOOD FOR HEALTH / BAD FOR EDUCATION, the patch off the back of Kaneda's jacket. His gang are the Capsules: pill-heads on superbikes, which is about as honest as gang iconography ever gets.
