THEY'RE JUST LIKE CANDY, the back announces, over Tetsuo sticking his tongue out with a capsule balanced on it β the pills that give Kaneda's gang their name, pitched like a jingle. The design runs back to Fashion Victim, the label licensed by Kodansha to print Akira shirts in 1988; those are the most coveted of the licensed Akira prints, the 1988β90 originals barely trade on the open market, and the label kept reprinting into the early 2000s, which is why the art has outlived any single batch of cotton. The front pairs the yellow AKIRA logotype and red katakana with a black-and-white figure hauling a long-barreled laser rifle through rubble β the weapon Kaneda lugs through the film's last act β an eye painted across the back of his jacket, watching you read the logo. KATSUHIRO OTOMO runs along the bottom in letterspaced caps: a cartoonist billed like a director, in 1988, before the West had agreed he'd earned it.
Black heavyweight short sleeve cotton tee with Akira graphic. Single stitch.
Akira, Katsuhiro Otomo's Neo-Tokyo. Title logotype on the front, with Otomo's credit and the THEY'RE JUST LIKE CANDY line on the reverse.
Neo-Tokyo, some decades after the blast and about ninety seconds before the next one.
