Barry McGee: Reproduction, the first book of photographs by the San Francisco artist, published by Aperture.
Barry McGee paints, and he also photographs β the streets, the people and the surfaces his paintings and installations come out of. Aperture gathered that archive into one hardback, 224 pages and 250 images, with texts by Ari Marcopoulos, Sandra S. Phillips and Sandy Kim. The pictures were shot worldwide on whatever camera was to hand, which is why they read as immediate and casual rather than composed. Unlike the exhibition catalogues, this is the photographs themselves: the raw material behind the clusters, characters and found objects.
250 photographs across 224 pages at 8.5 by 11 inches, the first book to collect McGee's photographic work in one place. Essays and contributions come from artist and filmmaker Ari Marcopoulos, SFMOMA curator emerita Sandra S. Phillips and photographer Sandy Kim.
