The Details
The demon on this print has a name — Murray, and Dio kept him on the next several album covers. This is where he debuted: Randy Berrett's painting for Holy Diver (1983), Ronnie James Dio's first album after walking out of Black Sabbath, a chained priest going under the waves while Murray looms over the rocks. Clergy groups read it as blasphemy, and Dio kept one answer loaded for a decade of interviews: how do you know it isn't a priest drowning a monster? Don't trust appearances was the whole point, delivered by the man who made the devil horns metal's official salute. The album became the measuring stick for everything else he did, and shirts from the 1983 Holy Diver tour are steady trade among metal collectors — WorthPoint, Defunkd and the battle-jacket forums all document '83 originals. The design here is the straight album art, HOLY DIVER lettered faint in the spray.
