The Fin

Josh Farberow's flex fin β€” True Ames' California Classic template refoiled to spring β€” a longboard single fin for performance surfing on a point.

Sold as a single fin for a standard longboard box, in 9.0", 9.5" and 10.0", in blue, kelp, smoke, clear or red, solid fiberglass with a flat matte finish. Farberow came to True Ames and asked for the California Classic outline foiled out until it flexed properly, and this is what came back: the same medium body and rake, thinner through the section, so the fin loads up and springs back rather than sitting stiff under the board. It has become a customer favourite since.

How that reads

Flex is stored energy. Through a bottom turn the fin bends and takes the load; coming out of it, that load comes back as drive off the tail. The medium body and the rake mean it still tracks β€” there is enough fin to hold a line while you are on the nose β€” but it never feels planted the way a stiff noserider fin does. Turns come out with more power and projection than the outline on its own would suggest.

Who it suits

Performance longboarding: surfing that goes to the nose and then back to the tail for a real turn, especially on the long right-hand points the fin was drawn for. Riders of the California Classic who want the same template with more life in it. Take the 10.0" for hold, the 9.0" for a looser tail.

What people say

The idea was to keep the proven California Classic shape but foil it thinner so the fin loads and springs under load β€” developed for his own performance longboarding in right-hand point surf.

From True Ames

A medium body with rake and fine-tuned flex that gives dependable stability, smooth flowing turns and real spring out of the pocket.

Our take

This is the fin for a performance log under a surfer who wants to work the whole wave, not just park on the nose β€” it adds lively flex and projection to the California Classic outline. If you want the same outline stiffer and more predictable, go California Classic; if you want planted nose time instead of spring, go Dewey Weber Hatchet.

More About This Fin

It has a medium body with rake and comes in three sizes: 9.0", 9.5", and 10.0", with most performance logs landing on the 9.5". It was developed for Farberow's performance longboarding in right-hand point surf.
