The Details
"A New Birth in Hip Hop," the slogan arcing around this shirt's back logo, was a real title: a 1994 Fugees promo release from the Blunted on Reality era, back when the group still carried its Tranzlator Crew billing — printed here in faint caps across the logo's middle. The emblem takes the phrase literally: a grown man dangled upside down by the ankles, delivery-room style, being born into the culture. The photography is from two years later, when the promise cashed — Lauryn Hill in the striped knit cap between Wyclef and Pras, the trio repeated small at the hip: the era of The Score (February 1996), the second and final Fugees album, the one that made them for a moment the biggest group in hip-hop. Nineties Fugees tees are a collected lane of their own — Score-era shirts sit with dealers like For All To Envy and Justin Reed — and this design's charm is the deep cut: it remembers what they were called before you knew them.
