The Fin

A classic keel outline out of Larry Gephart’s template library, reissued in fiberglass on a Futures base.

A pair of keel twins. The outline is the old one — long base, shallow depth, the shape fish were built around — but the fin is made in solid fiberglass and cut for a fin box rather than glassed on, and the foil work is what makes it feel modern.

How that reads

A keel converts a long base into drive and holds a line without needing to be pushed, which is why fish go so fast with so little effort. The foil is where a keel is won or lost: how the water leaves the trailing edge decides whether all that base turns into speed or into drag. Gephart’s does the first. What you do not get is pivot — a keel wants long arcs off the rail, not snaps off the tail.

Who it suits

Fish and wide-tailed twins with Futures boxes, in waves worth trimming across. If you like the look and feel of a traditional fish but do not want glass-on fins, this is the way to get it.
