The Greenough 4-A as a 2+1 combo β George Greenough's all-round centre fin sold with a pair of True Ames side bites, Futures compatible.
A matched three-fin set in solid fiberglass, in smoke. The centre fin comes in 6.5", 7.0" and 7.5", the side bites in 3.25" and 3.7". The 4-A is the best known single fin True Ames builds, and the balance that made its name carries straight into a 2+1 setup: a full base for drive off the bottom, and a tapering, moderately flexible tip that keeps the fin responsive through an arcing turn. Other size and colour combinations can be had by buying a centre fin and a set of side bites separately.
In a 2+1 the centre fin sets the character of the board and the two small side fins add hold through the turn and drive off the bottom. The 4-A holds when it is asked to and lets go when the rail comes off, which is what keeps a longer board from feeling locked in. Side bite size is the adjustment left to make: the 3.7" puts more bite in the tail, the 3.25" leaves the board closer to the single fin it was before the sides went in.
Longboards and mid-lengths with a centre box and two side plugs, across a wide spread of conditions. This is the set for a board that is too loose in the pocket on a single fin alone, but would lose its glide with a full performance 2+1 cluster in the rails.
Boards plugged for FCS rather than Futures? The Greenough 4-A: 2+1 Combo - FCS Compatible is the same set on FCS bases.
Volan is a woven fiberglass cloth laid by hand and finished with a resin that cures to a warm amber tint. It flexes differently than solid fiberglass β more spring, more life, more feel through turns. Where solid glass is stiff and direct, volan breathes with the wave.
The hand-laid process means each fin has subtle texture and character. It's heavier, which adds momentum through flat sections. Surfers who ride volan describe it as "warmer" β the fin does more of the work, trimming and holding without demanding constant input.
