The Fin

A 3.3" centre fin for a longboard box, drawn by San Diego shaper Hank Warner for 2+1 boards running larger side fins.

Solid fiberglass, in smoke, one size. This is the small end of the centre fin range: the fin to drop in the box when the side fins are already doing most of the work and what is wanted from the middle is control rather than steering. Warner drew it for eggs, longboards and 2+1s that felt over-finned with a full-size single fin in the box — it settles the board without adding the drag or the pivot point of a taller template.

How that reads

Area in the middle of the board is what stops the tail from sliding; take most of it away and the board turns off the rails and the side fins instead, with the centre fin only holding things together. Short means less resistance in trim and a shorter turning radius, and it also means very little hold when weight goes forward, so this is not the fin keeping a nose ride together.

Who it suits

2+1 setups with big side fins, and eggs or longboards that feel stiff and over-finned as they are. If the centre fin is meant to steer the board and hold the nose down, this is the wrong end of the range — a taller box fin will do that and this one deliberately will not.
