Before Tokyo Revengers, before Takashi Miike's Crows Zero films, there was the manga that built the delinquent genre's church: Hiroshi Takahashi's Crows, serialized 1990β98 and set at Suzuran β "the school of crows," so feral no student has ever united it. Harumichi Bouya walks in as a transfer student, blond quiff and shades, strong enough to take the school and completely uninterested in ruling it; the refusal is the whole character. The front has him lounging in his sukajan under his name in katakana; the back carries the P.A.D. star β the alliance his side raises for the manga's biggest war, against the Snake Heads. Official Crows merch barely existed, so what circulates is Japanese bootleg culture: manga panels blown up on black cotton, the same unlicensed energy as the delinquents it depicts. Miike's films made Suzuran famous worldwide, but they're prequels about a different generation β wearing Bouya is how you signal you read the book.
