The Details
Johnny Depp found the unpublished manuscript of The Rum Diary going through Hunter S. Thompson's papers at Woody Creek; he pushed it into print in 1998 and onto film in 2011, playing Thompson's alter ego Paul Kemp himself. The movie then earned a footnote bigger than itself: it's where Depp met Amber Heard, who played Chenault — and that pairing, not the film, is what this bootleg-style tee memorializes. It runs full rap-tee grammar: pink-washed photo collage on black, Depp slick-haired in a period suit and glasses, a fifties Corvette, the Hollywood sign, JOHNNY DEPP in outlined block letters over a script signature. The back is a three-panel film strip of the two of them mid-scene, his name across the top panel and AMBER HEARD across the bottom. Bootleg tees usually canonize rappers and dead icons; this one canonized a couple whose 2022 defamation trial became a live-streamed spectacle, which makes it less a fan shirt than a time capsule with famously bad timing.
