The Details
Nineteen eighty-nine plastered the bat signal on everything that would hold ink, but the shirt printers understood the villain was the seller: the Joker got his own all-over print, and this is the design — the white-suited comic-book Joker mid-cackle while HA HA HA rains around him in black, white and pink, the laugh literally covering the shirt. It comes out of the licensed 1989 DC Comics merch wave that rode Tim Burton's Batman through that summer's Batmania, and it has aged into one of the wave's recognized pieces: vintage dealers keep 1989 HaHaHa Joker shirts in rotation, with one currently listing an '89 example at $100. What makes the print work is that it's pure comics, not Nicholson — the lapels, the string tie, the pompadour and the acres of laughter come straight off the printed page, which is why it reads as a Joker shirt rather than a movie ad. The laugh was always the brand.
