The girl on the front is Azami Kurotani, from "The Scar" β the Uzumaki chapter in which the crescent mark on a much-adored girl's forehead begins to spiral, and the spiral begins to pull. Here she gets the poster treatment: amber face, red hair sweeping into the coil, a single bulged eyeball where the curl bottoms out, blood spattered across her cheek, JUNJI ITO beneath in letters drawn like something clawed down a wall. Ito serialized Uzumaki in 1998β99 β a town infected not by a monster but by a shape, the most elegant premise horror manga has ever committed to β and Azami is its cruelest single image, vanity turned literal vortex. Her face has since entered official circulation on licensed mall-goth shirts through Hot Topic and Ripple Junction, which is its own sort of ending for a character the story destroys for being looked at. This print takes the collector-bootleg treatment instead: heavier blood, horror-type lettering, contrast turned all the way up β for the one mangaka whose work never needed the exaggeration.
