The Details
Hours late to the last formal photo shoot of his life, Kurt Cobain finally came downstairs and asked photographer Jesse Frohman for a bucket — "just in case." The Observer had planned a sprawling Central Park session in the summer of 1993; what happened instead was roughly thirty minutes in a hotel conference room before a Roseland Ballroom show, Cobain in a thrift leopard coat and white Jackie-O sunglasses, cigarette going, nail polish chipped. Frohman left thinking he'd gotten two usable frames and found more than a hundred; eight months later Cobain was dead, and the session became a book titled, with terrible simplicity, The Last Session. This all-over print blows one of those frames up to torso scale and flanks it with blue-washed satellite shots at the shoulders — classic mid-90s bootleg construction, the same grammar as the memorial prints that flooded out after April 1994. The back has faded to peach ghosts of whatever it once carried, which is its own kind of memorial.
