The Fin
Ryan Lovelace's Piggyback Quad — a four-fin set with softer curves than usual, drawn for down-the-line surf.
Solid fiberglass, FCS or Futures — chosen at checkout — in smoke, kelp and clear. The fronts are flat foiled, the rears are 80/20, and the outlines are drawn with softer curves than a typical quad template. That is the intention of the whole set: positive drive that arrives smoothly instead of all at once, and turns that run into each other rather than each one stopping the board and starting again. Speed carries out of one turn and into the next, which is what a long down-the-line wave asks for.
How that reads
A quad has no centre fin to turn around, so the speed comes from the rail line and from four fins holding it. Flat inside foils on the fronts make the drive direct; the 80/20 rears sit behind them and stop the tail washing out as the board crosses from one rail to the other. Softening the curve of the outline is what takes the bite out of that transition, so the set redirects rather than pivots.
Who it suits
Four-box boards ridden in point surf, and anywhere the wave keeps running — fish, mid-lengths and quads meant to be trimmed and carved rather than pumped and snapped. A surfer chasing a sharper, more vertical quad should look for a more upright template with harder curves in it.

Put this on a fish or hybrid in the 5-to-7-foot range when you want keel glide with quad looseness — it shines most when the surf is small. If you'd rather run two fins and keep the squirt, the Lovelace Twin holds a longer line; if you need a quad that holds harder in size, look elsewhere.

The Lovelace Piggyback Quad is Ryan Lovelace's Piggyback template cut as a four-fin quad set by True Ames. The outline is a hybrid between a wide-base traditional keel and an upright late-1970s fin, carrying rake with less overall area than a full keel. The set runs larger flat-foiled front fins paired with smaller, foiled rears, and is intended for performance hybrid and fish shapes in roughly the 5-to-7-foot range.
