The Fin
Jeff McCallum's quad set — elongated rake on a flat inside foil — drawn for the round-pin quads he shapes.
A four-fin set in solid fiberglass on Futures bases, in charcoal. McCallum drew it to go under the round pin quads he has been shaping for years, so the template runs long in the rake and flat on the inside face. Those two things together are what give the set drive that keeps going all the way through a turn and release the instant the board is unweighted. It is a quad for boards meant to be surfed off the back foot.
How that reads
Elongated rake stretches the turn out: the fin holds its line through a drawn-out arc instead of pivoting short, which is what a round pin asks for. The flat inside foil keeps the flow attached and the drive coming as long as there is weight on the fin, then lets go cleanly as soon as there is not. Fast in a straight line, and not locked in off the top.
Who it suits
Round pins and pulled-tail quads, in waves with enough wall to draw a long turn on. Surfers who want drive and projection out of a quad rather than a loose, skatey feel, and who unweight to release rather than forcing the tail round.

Our take
Run it on a pulled-in fish or round-pin quad in waves with some push, when you want snappy, off-the-rail surfing and release on tap for a vertical hit or tight top turn. It rewards a back-foot rider who wants the tail to respond instantly; if you want hold through long carves or an easier-flowing all-rounder, look to the Mackie Quad or Mandala AK4 instead.
