The Details
Both sides of this shirt are Hugh Syme covers, which makes it a two-sided retrospective of Megadeth's strangest art era. The front is Youthanasia, 1994: an old woman pegging swaddled babies to a clothesline by their feet, a scene Syme said depicts "the reckless abandon that we, the caretakers of our planet, continue to exhibit... as we hang our children out to dry" — with a pair of skeletal ghouls looming over the farmstead where the printer stacked the montage. Flip it for Countdown to Extinction, 1992: the emaciated figure Syme described as "a levitating, emaciated and anguished octogenarian ascending into the light from his cold dank cell." The model was a gaunt man who had been Jerry Lewis's personal assistant in the 1950s, and the cell around him was a scale miniature Syme built for the shoot. Two covers, one garment — album art obsessive enough to reward the person who asks about the back.
