The graphic on this shirt is a photograph of blood and semen. Not metaphorically: Andres Serrano β the artist whose "Piss Christ" had already made him the culture war's favorite target β made Semen and Blood III in 1990 by pressing bovine blood and his own semen between sheets of plexiglass. Kirk Hammett found it flipping through a Serrano monograph in the SFMOMA bookstore, and in 1996 it became the cover of Load β the record where Metallica cut their hair, wore eyeliner for Anton Corbijn, and made half their audience declare them dead. The all-over print is the era's shirt: mid-90s AOPs were costly to produce and made in small numbers, and the Load AOP is now listed north of $1,000 β the grail of the band's most hated era, which is its own kind of vindication. Fine art, wearable: the most metal object in the room came out of a gallery.
Grey short sleeve cotton tee with Metallica Acid graphic. No tag.
