Count the albums: the white cross-field of Master of Puppets with the puppeteer's red hands looming out of the storm, Ride the Lightning's electric chair sparking at the edge, the rope-bound Lady Justice of ...And Justice for All swinging her scales through the middle, and a serpent coiled behind her off the Black Album's "Don't Tread on Me." Four records, 1984 to 1991 — the band's entire ascent screened into one lightning-lit panorama that runs shoulder to shoulder across the shirt. This is the maximalist mode of early-90s metal merch, when a graphic stopped being a patch on the chest and became the whole garment, and the montage answers the only question a band shirt ever really asks — which era are you loyal to? — with: all of them. Somewhere under the statue the grass is still green over the graves, which is about as much optimism as Metallica artwork ever allowed.
