Somebody put Metallica in a jail cell for this photo, and the print runs the shot big: four members crowded behind a wall of steel bars, hands hung through the grid, the picture hand-tinted so their faces and arms glow taxi-yellow against the grey, with the spiked logo arched over the top like a marquee. Band-photo tees are the oldest form of metal merch, and the concept shot is their best genre — the biggest metal band on earth, locked up, is exactly the joke a printer would bet a screen on. The hair does the dating the print won't: all four wear it long, which places the photo before the 1996 shearing the old guard treated as a betrayal. No caption, no tour dates, no legible copyright line — just one hot-tinted photograph under an arched logo, the entire vocabulary of the unofficial tee in two moves.
