The Details
Pushead signed this design twice — his scrawl sits in the bone-pile on the front and again, with a ©, beside the earth on the back — and that signature is the point. Brian "Pushead" Schroeder, the skate-zine artist whose ink built much of Metallica's late-80s visual identity, drew this for "The Unforgiven," the Black Album's 1991 gunslinger ballad: an executioner in a rotted coat striding over skulls, noose in one fist, fire in the other, the condemned man reduced to a red silhouette. The back is the better panel — the planet rendered as a skull-faced globe over the lyric "so i dub thee unforgiven," with a queue of empty white figures shuffling toward it, new business arriving forever. Vintage dealers date the design to 1991–92 and keep it in stock the way bookstores keep classics, and Metallica's own store sells the executioner again today: a bootleg-collector favorite that got canonized.
