The Details
Punk's most famous logo was shoplifted from a 1946 movie serial: The Crimson Ghost, twelve Republic Pictures chapters of a skull-masked villain menacing the inventor of a counter-atomic device. In 1979 Glenn Danzig and Jerry Only, hunting for imagery to screen-print, put the Ghost on a flyer for a March 28 show at Max's Kansas City; by June it was on the cover of the "Horror Business" single — redrawn with its own detailing rather than lifted straight from a film still — and the Misfits had a mascot that outgrew the band. This shirt is the logo's other life: a bootleg all-over print, white cotton tiled edge to edge with Ghost skulls, band photos and the slogan GOD SAVE THE PUNK, a drippy red-and-yellow MISFITS logo across the chest. Unofficial Misfits shirts are a tradition nearly as old as the band — the skull was borrowed to begin with — while the sanctioned version sells in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame's museum store. The Ghost won either way.
