The Details
Two American religions on one shirt: Universal monster movies and Winston Cup racing. In 2000, Bobby Labonte's #18 Interstate Batteries Pontiac Grand Prix ran an officially licensed Universal Studios Monsters Frankenstein scheme — the green car repainted with the monster on the door, remembered now through the Action die-casts made of it. This tee is that promotion in cotton: the Karloff-style monster glowering over a full moon, bats and a castle, above THE MAN WHO MADE A MONSTER — the tagline off the original 1931 Frankenstein posters — and the #18 car below; the back adds the Universal Studios Monsters logo, the monster reaching out, and Labonte's printed signature. Labonte won the Winston Cup championship that same season, which makes this a title-year car in fancy dress. Late-90s NASCAR all-over "big print" tees are their own collected lane now, and the monster-crossover schemes are among the strangest and most specific things that era produced.
