The Details
Oliver Stone spent 1994 defending himself against the charge that Natural Born Killers turned murderers into pop merchandise — which was, he kept insisting, the point. The film is a satire of a media machine that makes Mickey and Mallory into cover stars, and the marketplace obliged by making shirts. This design commits completely: printed edge to edge, black grime and spatter across white cotton, pistols in the corners like a border pattern, and at the center Woody Harrelson and Juliette Lewis leaning into each other, posing exactly like the celebrities the film says the media made them — the title scrawled in red underneath, "natural born" struck through. The controversy never faded: the film was blamed, in courtrooms and op-eds, for a string of copycat crimes, with John Grisham arguing Stone should be liable the way a maker of defective products is. NBK shirts from the era trade steadily with vintage collectors, and an all-over print is the loudest possible way to wear the argument.
