The Details
Dealers billing something as "the holy grail of vintage t-shirts" usually mean this design, and not just among Nirvana shirts: the 1993 Heart Shaped Box all-over print — hearts stacked edge to edge in red and black around a blue heart, gold NIRVANA lettering, and the flowered heart-box and lilies of the In Utero single whose imagery it wears. Originals were double-sided prints on Giant blanks (Acme and Sogo runs exist), and the market has gone feral around them: Defunkd documents a Canadian variant, backstage pass printed on, selling for $8,500 in 2021, and counterfeiters are committed enough to weave fake Giant collar tags. Which brings us to this collar: it reads giant. That is exactly what an original says, and exactly what a good fake says, and the house policy is to price the cotton honestly and let the print do the talking. The design needs no authentication — hearts and lilies for a song about a heart-shaped box, made the autumn before there was anything to memorialize.
