Count the Luffys on the back and the print dates itself: Gear 2 flushed and steaming, the giant Gear 3 fist, Gear 4's coiled bulk — and in the center, white-haired and grinning, Gear 5, the awakened form the manga held back until chapter 1044 and the anime didn't air until August 2023. Whatever the black cotton's wash suggests, the design is younger than that broadcast. The front is the other end of the timeline: the classic Gomu Gomu no Gatling, one small pirate at the center of a starburst of his own fists, the signature attack Eiichiro Oda has been drawing since the series started in 1997 on its way to becoming the best-selling manga ever printed. That's the composition's actual subject — the kid who threw infinite punches on one side, what he awakens into on the other — and the reason the bootleg-collage format fits is that One Piece has run long enough to be nostalgic about itself. A shirt with a birthdate: at least it's honest about which era it loves.
