The Fin

Rich Pavel's quad set: a traditional keel deconstructed and split in two, for fish-style boards that want keel drive plus release.

Four fins in solid fiberglass, FCS or Futures, in smoke. Pavel took a traditional keel, split it in two and turned it into a quad: fronts of 4.38" on a 4.30" base, rears of 4.77" on a 3.44" base, with almost the same area front and back. The point was to get more performance out of fish-style boards without giving up what a keel is good at in the first place.

How that reads

Splitting the keel keeps the drive and the fluidity — the board still runs down the line like a fish — but two smaller fins per side release where one long-based keel would keep tracking. Speed carries through the turn instead of being scrubbed at the end of it, and the backhand turn, the one a keel makes you work hardest for, comes far more easily.

Who it suits

Fish and fish-style boards with quad boxes, ridden by someone who likes what a keel does in trim but wants to be able to turn off both rails. Choose FCS or Futures at checkout; the template is the same either way.
