The Details
Seven hundred rented hospital beds, thirty hired hands and a cooperative tide: that is how the cover of A Momentary Lapse of Reason was made. Storm Thorgerson dressed Saunton Sands in Devon with real iron bedsteads in June 1987 — no compositing — chasing a line from "Yet Another Movie": a vision of an empty bed. Photographer Robert Dowling took a gold award from the Association of Photographers for the result. This shirt frames that sleeve in fat pink PINK FLOYD lettering with the title across the back, and the neck tag reads BROCKUM WORLDWIDE, MADE IN USA — the tour-merchandise house whose tags sit inside licensed Pink Floyd shirts of this era. The album itself, September 1987, was the first after Waters walked out and went to court over the name; Gilmour's answer was to rebuild the machine and tour it for two years. The beds won the argument — the sleeve is now more famous than the feud.
