September 24, 1991 put two era-defining records in American shops on the same morning: Nevermind and Blood Sugar Sex Magik. Nirvana got the obituaries' front page; the Peppers got the cover you could wear. This print is that cover entire β the four band members shot in queasy close-up by Gus Van Sant, the film director, who did the album's photography and art direction, their tongues reaching for a thorned rose drawn by Dutch tattoo legend Henk Schiffmacher, credited in the liner notes as Henky Penky. The border keeps the sleeve's pun, splicing band into title one corner at a time: RED BLOOD, HOT SUGAR, CHILI SEX, PEPPERS MAGIK. Period Blood Sugar prints are their own collector lane now β the vintage dealers handle 1991 pieces as headline stock β but the claim this design makes is simpler: it was the other album from rock's most consequential release date, the one that put a tattoo parlor on the front instead of a swimming pool.
