The wave on the front is the whole cover of Nowhere: an open-ocean swell that never breaks, shot by Warren Bolster — a photographer celebrated for skateboard and surf work, of all the lineages to hand shoegaze its defining image. Ride released the record on Creation in October 1990, guitars stacked into weather, and the sleeve refused land, horizon, resolution; NOWHERE, printed alone across this shirt's back, was always the complete statement. The collar tag here reads BROCKUM — the arena-merch giant of the era, and the tag the Defunkd authentication threads look for when sorting originals from the reprints this design has accumulated. The market prices that provenance: a 1990 promo version of the Nowhere shirt was recently listed at $695 on Grailed, with others from $180. Thirty-five years on, Nowhere sits at or near the top of most shoegaze canons, and Bolster's wave keeps getting mistaken for a metaphor, which is what the best covers do.
