Read the fine print and the front of this shirt is a wire-service caption: Seoul, South Korea, April 12 — a student rushing riot police with a petrol bomb outside a Seoul university, three hundred students fighting police over the dissident Moon Ik-hwan and a shipyard strike in Ulsan. That 1989 news photograph, caption intact, is the artwork of "Refuse/Resist" — track one of Chaos A.D. (1993), the record where Brazil's Sepultura made thrash explicitly political. The back stacks CHAOS 1994 beside a square splicing the American and Brazilian flags, the graphic from the album's 1994 tour shirts. Originals of that design came from Blue Grape, the merch company attached to Roadrunner Records; one sold on Grailed for $165, and long-sleeve versions have been listed north of $500. The design's whole argument sits on the front: no demon, no gore, just documentary evidence that the actual world was the frightening thing.
