New Line's one big note on Seven was the ending — the box was too dark, change it — and Brad Pitt's answer was that he'd walk if they touched it. The box stayed; the film made $327 million and rebuilt Hollywood's idea of what a serial-killer picture could be, all rain and bleach-bypass rot in a city David Fincher never names. This is the design from the original 1995 campaign: Pitt's Detective Mills in sepia under the red tally marks — a five-bar gate and two more, seven — and on the back the sins stacked in seven different hands, GLUTTONY down through LUST, scrawled like pages from John Doe's notebooks. The design has been reprinted plenty, which is its own tribute; the '95 promo originals are what collectors chase. Fincher came off Alien 3 swearing he was done directing. Seven is what changed his mind, and this shirt wears the exact imagery that did it.
