The Details
Three schoolmates from Newcastle, Australia won a national demo competition in 1994 with a song called "Tomorrow"; within a year Frogstomp was top ten in America and Silverchair were being flown around the world between terms — actual schoolboys, fifteen when it started. Freak Show, in 1997, was the sound of them noticing what they'd become: the exhibit. The tour merch ran with it, sideshow-style, and this front is that lane — the band's name in a tattoo-scroll banner over a found portrait of a brilliantined 1950s schoolboy grinning inside a gold circle, the wholesome kid none of them was being allowed to be. Documented 1997 Freak Show North American tour tees carry exactly this construction — navy cotton, retro photo on the chest, itinerary across the back — and vintage examples currently list between $102 and $175, with one dealer calling the navy "very rare." Step right up: the freaks were the ones doing their homework on the bus.
