An iconic figure in San Diego surf culture, Skip Frye is an accomplished surfer well known for his silky smooth style as well as his innovative and unique designs. Devised in the mid ‘70s, Skip’s single fin was developed to perform and excel in a supporting role for some of the boards he’s best known for such as his Eggs and Gliders. Minimalistic and pure, this fin lends itself to fluid and graceful surfing.
If you want to follow in Skip’s footsteps and search for that ultimate trim, minimize drag, increase speed, and let the board do the talking…Then this is the fin for you.

Our take
Put this on a Frye egg, a glider, or any fuller hybrid where the priority is trim, glide, and a planted tail — it holds a line and projects forward rather than swinging the tail through an arc. It is not a carving fin, and if your board feels dead and needs the fin to supply the engine, the Greenough 4A is the more versatile choice.
More About This Fin
The Skip Frye is a single fin template Frye drew in the mid-1970s for his own eggs and gliders, made by True Ames. The outline is upright with very little rake and a base nearly as wide as the fin is tall. It comes in five sizes from 6" to 9.25" and fits a standard single-fin box, working as a pure single or as the center of a 2+1. A Volan version of the same template is also made.
