Skip Frye’s thruster set, and small for a thruster on purpose: less fin, so the board’s rail line does the work.
The Frye Tri is a classic from Skip’s archives. The two front fins are slightly larger than the trailer in both depth and base, which buys forgiveness without giving up control; all three are compact for a tri set, which is Skip’s whole approach — use less fin and more of the board.
Small fins with gentle rake and a balanced profile release early and change direction without effort. What you give up is the locked-in hold of a bigger set in solid surf; what you get is the glide and the smooth, drawn turns Skip’s boards are known for.
Eggs, gliders and any board shaped around long rail lines, in waves where flow matters more than power. If your board is a 2+1 rather than a three-plug thruster, pair a Skip Frye single with the Skip Frye side bites instead.
Want a thruster with more hold for bigger waves? The CI Tri Large or the Power Trailer Tri. Want the Frye feel on a single fin? The Skip Frye single, in solid glass or volan.
All three fins are cut on the small side for a thruster setup, which stays true to Skip's overall philosophy of generally needing less fin while using more of the board's rail-line, with a gentle amount of rake for silky smooth turning ability and effortless directional changes.
Run this set on a Frye-style hybrid or fuller egg set up as a thruster when flow and clean trim matter more than vertical snap — it's for drawing speed lines on open faces, not darting off the tail. If you want a quicker, more aggressive thruster feel, the TA Tri is the snappier call.
The Skip Frye Tri is a three-fin thruster set in solid fiberglass with Futures bases, made by True Ames and sold as a complete set. All three fins are cut on the small side for a thruster setup with a gentle amount of rake, and the front fins are slightly larger than the trailer. It is intended for fuller eggs, hybrids, and Frye-style boards set up as thrusters.
