A small box fin with an overhang that sits further back in the box, in three sizes β a utility template for experimental setups.
4.5", 5.0" and 5.5", solid fiberglass with a gloss finish, in black. It is the same idea as the standard small box fin, but with an overhang that carries the fin further back than the box alone allows: 1.25" on the 5" and 5.5", 1.125" on the 4.5". A utility template, drawn to finish an unusual setup rather than to be the fin a board is designed around.
Sitting further back in the box moves the fin's pivot point back with it, which settles the tail and adds hold off the back foot without adding much area to drag around. Behind a twin or a quad it works as a trailer; on its own in a small board it is a stabiliser. The three sizes are the adjustment β the 4.5" changes the least, the 5.5" gives the most hold and drive.
Boards with a small box in the tail and setups being worked out rather than followed: twins wanting a trailer, quads with a fifth box, and one-off shapes where the fin has to fill a specific gap. Surfers who move fins around and want the placement, not just the template.
The overhang sets the blade further back in the box and puts more fin in the water than the flush version, adding bite for a small-box board that needs more hold in steeper or more powerful surf β the overhang is there for area, not flex.
Choose the overhang version when your small-box mid-length or fish feels loose or washes out and you want more bite without going taller β it shifts the feel toward drive and authority at the cost of some looseness. If your board already holds fine and you want a quicker, freer feel, the standard Small Box Fin is the better pick.
The True Ames Small Box Fin with Overhang is a solid-fiberglass single fin using the standard True Ames small-box template with a base overhang, offered in 4.5", 5", and 5.5" sizes. True Ames lists the overhang at 1.125" on the 4.5" and 1.25" on the 5" and 5.5", setting the blade further back in the box than the flush version; the "1.5" in the product name is not the per-size figure. It is made for small-box mid-lengths, fish, and hybrids.
