The Details
Richard Avedon's lawyers put the black patch on Sister. The 1987 sleeve was a collage of found photographs, among them Avedon's portrait of a twelve-year-old Sandra Bennett; after a threatened suit the band covered it with a black sticker, then deleted it from later pressings — a snapshot of Disney's Magic Kingdom on the back cover went the same way. This long sleeve carries the era whole: the band portrait in its scratched hand-drawn frame on the front, a staring girl in a pinafore filling the back, and SONIC YOUTH running down both arms in the same nervous lettering. Sister (SST, 1987) is where the no-wave squall resolved into songs — the record that set up Daydream Nation a year later. Vintage Sister prints are their own collected corner of the Sonic Youth shirt world: long-sleeve examples have been listed between roughly $105 and $300 on Grailed and elsewhere.
