The Details
Under the flames on the front sits a copyright line from Speed Racer Enterprises, and under the collar a Tultex tag — the Martinsville, Virginia mill whose blanks are all over 90s printed tees — which is honest evidence of what this is: a 90s-era licensed Speed Racer shirt. The design earns the cotton. The Mach 5 blasts through a ring of fire with tires and wrenches tumbling loose around it, Speed calm at the wheel; turn it over and the back finishes the stunt from behind, the same car exiting the same fire, debris still airborne. Two-sided storytelling was the era's flex. The subject is older than anime fandom itself: Mach GoGoGo left Tatsunoko's studio in 1967 and hit American syndication as Speed Racer that same year, one of the first Japanese cartoons on US television — which means every JDM tee in this collection is, in some lineage sense, downstream of this car.
