Paul Schrader's script gave Robert De Niro almost nothing for the mirror scene — Travis speaks to himself — and De Niro filled the silence with the most quoted improvisation in American film. This design runs the title up the front in checker-cab yellow over a still of Travis pulling both guns in the hallway, and prints the line twice: once with an "Are" the movie never quite says, once straight — the kind of loose transcription that marks a fan print rather than a studio one. The back is the heavier image: the mohawked Travis of the last reel over HERE IS A MAN WHO WOULD NOT TAKE IT ANYMORE, the diary line that sounds like deliverance and reads, on a second viewing, like a warning label. Taxi Driver won the Palme d'Or in 1976 from a jury whose own president, Tennessee Williams, publicly recoiled at its violence — awarded and condemned in the same season. A movie about a man nobody listens to, quoted on a shirt. Travis would have understood.
