The Details
James O'Barr started The Crow to survive the death of his fiancée, killed by a drunk driver; by the time the film adaptation neared completion in 1993, its star was dead too — Brandon Lee, 28, killed by a prop-gun accident on set with days left to shoot. The film was finished with doubles and some of the earliest digital face replacement, released in May 1994, and the grief baked into every layer of it is why it became the decade's goth touchstone instead of just another comic-book movie. This is the 1994 licensed design — winged crow emblem under red gothic letters on the front, © 1994 in the print, and on the back the image that mattered: Lee's face in Eric Draven's white-and-black paint, filling the shirt. In 1994 this was worn the way the Cobain memorial prints were worn the same spring — as mourning you could put on. Licensed movie tees from that year are their own vintage lane now, and the Crow face print is one of its most recognized.
