One of horror's most famous images is a Magritte, transposed. William Friedkin modeled Father Merrin's arrival — the silhouetted hat, the streetlamp, the cold shaft of light falling from Regan's bedroom window — on The Empire of Light, the Magritte painting he'd seen at MoMA; "I chose the house to match the Magritte painting," he said, right down to the lamp. That shot became the 1973 one-sheet, and this design prints the whole poster, green-washed still, William Peter Blatty possessive credit, full cast block down to the screenplay line — a movie poster worn as a movie poster. The film it advertises broke the genre's ceiling: lines around the block in the winter of '73–74, fainting stories in the press, and the first Best Picture Oscar nomination ever given to a horror film. On the vintage market, Exorcist promo tees from the 90s get listed as grails; the poster image is the one every reissue keeps coming back to, because nobody has composed a scarier doorstep since. Back is blank — the front says everything.
