Frank Kozik recycled his way onto one of the 90s’ biggest albums: the painting of a blond boy on a swing — leg brace, giant sand flea perched on his lap — had originally been drawn for Ritual Device, an obscure Nebraska noise band, before Dexter Holland found it in Kozik’s poster-art book and licensed it for Americana (1998). Holland’s verdict: “very glossy, innocent and 1950s, but with a twisted aspect,” which was the record’s entire thesis about the country it’s named for. The front of this shirt is that cover, boy and flea inside the blue vortex, THE OFFSPRING in the red plate. The back is the other Americana graphic: a flaming sacred heart bound in thorns with a crown above it and a dagger through it, VERITAS on the banner beneath and 23 · 11 either side — the tattoo-flash motif that ran through the album’s artwork. Americana became the band’s second-best-selling album, and Kozik — who died in 2023 — spent the decade as alternative rock’s house poster artist, so the front of this shirt is a legitimate piece of his catalogue. The swing set does the work Norman Rockwell never would.
